The Centaur’s Prediction

A future foretold
Twins at court
Cor and Corin are taken to a wise Centaur soon after their birth. The Centaur predicts that Cor will one day save Archenland from its greatest danger.
A prophecy overheard
Lord Bar hears the prediction and decides to remove the child, fearing what the prophecy could mean for political plans connected to Calormen. Knowledge of Cor’s future therefore places him in danger before he can act.
The prophecy gives Cor’s infancy a public significance that he cannot understand. Its fulfillment will depend not on a conscious heroic plan but on the life that follows his abduction.
Kidnapped and Lost

An heir disappears
A secret removal
Lord Bar kidnaps Cor and carries him toward the coast, using a prepared ship to take him away from his family. King Lune pursues, but the sea chase cannot prevent the child from being separated from his parents.
A boat without a name
When Bar’s ship is eventually taken, a surviving man reports that the child was sent away in a small boat with a knight. The boat is never found by the searchers, and Cor’s place in the royal family becomes a mystery.
The disappearance erases Cor from the life for which he was born. It also carries him toward an upbringing that will later prepare him to understand people outside the royal court.
A Childhood in Calormen

An unknown heir
Raised by Arsheesh
Cor grows up under the name Shasta in Arsheesh’s household, doing hard work and receiving little affection. He has no knowledge of the kingdom or family from which he came.
Character formed in obscurity
Life without status makes Shasta observant, curious about the North, and practiced in enduring hardship. He does not know that his origin is royal, so his actions are shaped by need rather than expectation.
The childhood that seems to have erased Cor’s identity also gives him experience beyond a court’s protection. When his birth is revealed, his courage will not depend on having been raised as a prince.
The Messenger at Anvard

A prophecy takes shape
A dangerous road
After losing the relief column in fog, Shasta encounters Rabadash’s riders and learns that Anvard is under attack. He cannot simply follow the enemy or return to his companions, so he continues toward the king.
Trust earned by action
King Lune listens to Shasta’s warning and rides for the castle. The boy’s ability to communicate the danger helps the defenders prepare and allows allied forces to respond.
Cor fulfills the predicted rescue before he knows he is the prince named by the prophecy. His action grows from loyalty to people he has only just met, not from a claim to inheritance.
The Heir Comes Home

A name restored
Evidence in the family
King Lune recognizes that Shasta resembles the missing child. Cor recounts the infant’s abduction and boat journey, connecting the history told by Arsheesh to the royal family’s loss.
Duty accepted
Cor becomes the elder twin and heir under Archenland’s succession law. He is uneasy about the responsibilities ahead, while Corin is delighted not to inherit the crown.
The prophecy’s fulfillment restores a family and establishes Cor’s future role. His journey from anonymous laborer to heir does not make him eager for power, but it places him within a duty he did not choose and must learn to accept.
